Lipstick has always been a difficult makeup product for me. I suffer from very dry lips and it usually just looks terrible. I actually had a friend make a comment about it once and I felt so self-conscious about it that I completely stopped wearing lipstick for years. When I started working in the fashion world, though, all of my coworkers were obsessed with lipstick. I felt a little left out, so I finally decided that I should try giving it another shot. I bought a few tubes (mostly NYX, because that’s what they all loved) and I would wear them on occasion. They still didn’t look great, but I would try to exfoliate my lips with sugar scrubs and toothbrushes, so it wasn’t QUITE as bad as before. My biggest issue, however, was the lasting-power of them. It would come off if I did ANYTHING with my mouth. I would put lipstick on before heading to lunch, and the second I would take a bit of my Chipotle burrito, my face and the food would be covered in lipstick. Not a good look. It was so annoying and made me want to wear it less and less.
Cut forward to seeing a Buzzfeed video about a product called LipSense. It seriously looked too good to be true. It features clips of girls drinking, rubbing their lips, kissing their hand… you name it, it didn’t budge. Then one day I saw one of my old friends from middle school actually sold it. At $25 per tube, it seemed a little pricier than I would normally spend on a tube of lipstick, but I thought… what the heck? Let’s give it a try! So I ordered a red shade (Strawberry Shortcake) and a neutral color (Kiss me Katie), along with a couple of glosses because it’s a two-part system.
When they arrived, I gave the Stawberry Shortcake + Glossy Gloss a go. You apply three thin layers (with drying time in between) and then top it with gloss. It was a little weird applying it, as a noticed a slight burning sensation. I immediately looked it up to make sure that wasn’t a bad sign and read that it’s just the cosmetic grade alcohol in it and that it just happens when you have extremely cracked lips, like mine. PHEW! You also have to make sure you only go in one direction. I made this mistake the second time I wore it. Think of it as a dry erase marker. When you wipe backwards after making a mark, what happens? It erases it. Same with LipSense.
So I wore the LipSense all afternoon, filmed an audition video, ate dinner, kissed, drank… not even the slightest budge. By the time I went to bed, it was still on. (I know, I know… but y’all… this is who I am and that will never change. My name is Carmen and I’m a makeup sleeper.) When I woke up the next morning, it still looked perfect. PERFECT! I’m not even kidding, when I say that I got in the shower and it STILL STAYED ON! I had to physically remove it with makeup remover for it to come off.
The best part is, when I removed it, my lips were already in noticeably better condition! I could tell the way the makeup came off as I removed it, that it was exfoliating the dry skin off my lips. They were SO much smoother. Plus, the gloss was super moisturizing. So to recap, it looked amazing, it stayed on all day, AND it healed my ratchet lips?! I knew at that point that I was SOLD! This was the BEST makeup product I had ever used. I have a handful of beauty product obsessions that I swear by, but this one knocked them all of out of the park. Not to mention, it finally completed my search for the final piece of the makeup puzzle for me. I had found a product I loved for just about every other area of the face, but lips was still in the trial and error phase. But not anymore!
What’s more, as I started wearing my two colors over the next week or two, I started getting TONS of compliments. My lips were on Kylie Jenner’s level and people were taking notice! As people started to ask me about it more and more, I started thinking that maybe it would be a fun side project to sell it. I signed up the next day as a Distributor though my friend that I had originally purchased them from. In all honesty, I really just wanted the discount on products because I needed ALL the colors. But of course my friends and family wanted in on the action. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve turned on to this stuff who have said they’re never going back to regular lipstick.
As I’ve gotten many more colors and also learned more about the product/spoken with other users, I’ve definitely learned that not all LipSense is the same. They all have slightly different formulas, making some stay on better than others. I have a few colors that will literally stay on for DAYS, while a few others do begin getting a little worn by the end of the day. A lot of it depends on your own body chemistry, where it works really well for one person, but not as much for another. Nevertheless, I have only found one color that doesn’t go on well for me, and that is Mulled Wine. Some ladies love that one, though, so that’s just my personal experience.
There are so many amazing shades, with new ones being released on the reg. Also, if you’re like me, you’ll enjoy these important product facts: They are NOT tested on animals, they use natural ingredients, meet FDA requirements, and are made in the USA. And the price is a little bit of a turn-off, I know. BUT I can assure you this cost is offset by the frequency of use. You don’t have to keep applying it constantly throughout the day like normal lipsticks, so one tube ends up lasting WAY longer than the cheap ones. In the end, it actually ends up SAVING most people money.
So if you’ve been hearing the buzz about LipSense and you’re wondering whether or not to try it… TRY IT. Worst case scenario, you don’t like it and you can return it for a full refund. I genuinely can’t say enough good things about this stuff. But just a warning… it’s addicting. Once you try one color, you’ll need them ALL! 😉
